Terry Pratchett's Mort - Theatre Review

Death - one of the main characters in Mort
The story of what happens when Death takes on a reluctant apprentice

Death comes to us all. When he came to Mort, he offered him a job.

Review by Michelle Nicol

Any production which mentions BBC Tyne in its programme notes is obviously angling for a good review, but this is one which genuinely deserves the praise.

The story and characters were very familiar to me from Terry Pratchett's Discworld books. There's always a danger that actors will interpret your favourite characters in a radically different way, but in this version, they were all spot on.

The production seemed perfect for the small intimate atmosphere of the Live Theatre. A minimal set and small scene changes, kept the action moving at a fast pace. A good choice of music also helped add to the atmosphere.

Despite the seemingly dark subject matter, Mort is full of humour, in both script and physical comedy, superbly interpreted by the cast. Watch out for Ysabell's eyebrows!

It seems unfair to pick out indviduals when all the cast took on parts both large and small with great enthusiasm. But Richard Hall boomed magnificently as Death (and wrestled with what looked like a terribly uncomfortable costume).

And Roxie Willows showed us both the regal and petulant sides of Princess Keli and was especially effective in the scenes shared with Cutwell the wizard.

Whether or not you're already a fan of Pratchett's alternative universe, this is a great production, which promises many laughs and a wonderful night's entertainment.

Stage Focus are a young, lively and talented bunch who seem to enjoy what they do and that comes over to the audience.

As I left the theatre and descended into the Tyneside fog, I kept half an ear open, listening for the sound of thundering hooves and the swish of a scythe....
