In a very black room in a very black house with a very black garden somewhere just off the Disc, Death, a seven foot skeleton with a taste for hot curries is about to take on a new apprentice: Mort, a thoughtful, awkward farmboy who appears to have been built entirely out of knees. Once reassured that the 'death' side of being Death is not compulsory, Mort revels in his new responsibility but finds that romantic longings for a certain princess and accidentally creating a chink in the fabric of reality isn't helping things go according to plan...
